Our Ducks

We raise muscovy ducks. They are a large duck and pretty tame. We have 4 hens and 2 drakes. In comparison to chickens the ducklings are very curious and aware of their surroundings. They don't mind being picked up and handled. They are messy little creatures though. Be forewarned that if there is water and food anywhere around they will have it all mixed up and all over themselves. They sure are cute. The adults grow up and are so self sufficient that you really don't have to do much at all to care for them. We have a pond where the ducks stay 85% of the time. They nest inside hollow trees, under buildings, in brush piles. Wherever they feel safe. If anything messes up their nest they move to another one. They don't like to have their eggs messed with too much. They will hide them as much as possible and you can spend days searching for a nest before you find it. They can multiply quickly. Especially if you take the babies from them and raise them yourself. The mommas will go right back to laying and brood another batch. My girls have hatched 9-16 chicks at a time. Most of the time they are 14-16. They can have several broods a year. So if you don't want lots of babies, then it would be wise to limit the number of eggs they are setting on. This can be difficult considering they hide their nests so well.
