Pippa Pippa was a rescue. Late in 2002, I got a call for a rescue. It was a little girl that said they found some puppies but that they couldn't catch them. She said they had been feeding them but that they couldn't get them to come close enough. She said there was originally 5 and that different people were able to catch all but the last 2. I went out there with a box and a sheet to see if I could catch these puppies. When I got there, I was surprised to see two Chihuahuas. I was able to catch one but not the other. I caught her with a sheet and she came snapping and growling. I put her in a box and did not look at her good until I got her home. Once home, I put her in a 4x4 cage and got inside with her. Took her out of the box, with my gloves on :) Once out of the box she started to calm down a bit. I think she realized I was not trying to hurt her. I looked her over and over all she looked good. She needed a bath and some flea meds. She was fine with me and the kids. Because she was an adult and she was out there with other males I wanted to make sure she was not pregnant, so I had her spayed immediately. It was funny when I went to pick her up they told me I had to get her out of the cage. She had already bit one of the workers and she would not come out. I went back and she was fine for me. I was rescuing then so my purpose was to find her a good home. I tried 3 different homes, 2 of which she bit during the introductions. The third I left to see if she would do better once I was gone. She began to foam at the mouth and get terribly sick. I returned quickly to pick her up and bring her back home. I gave up on trying to find her a home. My husband was out of town when I brought her in. After he came home she would not have anything to do with him. It took a year of feeding her treats, ice cubes, and a lot of nice talking before he could hold her. She does not go after anyone, she just doesn't like strangers to reach down to pick her up. She gets scared and her first reaction is to bite. So, when we have company one of the first things we say is 'don't reach out to pet the Chihuahua'. Most kids listen :) She is doing much better now and has not bitten anyone is several years. We estimated her age at one year old in 2002. She is a sweetie and her favorite dog is Sadie. They sleep together all of the time. She even likes to clean Sadie's ears. |
