Silkies
Silkies were one of my first chicken breeds. They are also one of the breeds
I have kept over all of the others. I got my first silkies in May of 2002. I
have had black, blue, splash, gray, white, buff, partridge, and some odd colors.
Right now I am breeding blue/splash, buff/reds, and gray. I may get a few other colors
here and there, but do not breed them regularly.
Silkies are a very sweet breed. There are several that I can go out and pick
up with very little fuss. They seem to get along with other breeds without any
problems. They have an unusual feather that in turn makes the silkies soft like
a cat or rabbit. They actually look more like toys than chickens.
I breed silkies just for fun. I do not claim to have show quality because I
do not show. I breed what I like. I do try to keep with the standard of dark
skin, 5 toes, good foot feathering, walnut combs, etc. But I never claim show
quality.

Blues and Splashes |
|
Dark Blue hen, she is darker that she
looks in the photo.
|
 |
| Brave
Heart
This boy is so fluffy. We will see if he will make
fluffy babies
|
 |
| Splash
hen, she is a beauty |
 |
| Light
blue hen. She is keeping and eye on me. |
 |
| This
is a dark blue pullet. I like her smaller full head, but she is molting
when I took the pic so she isn't ver attractive. |
 |
| This
boy is also molting at the time of the pic. He is beautiful in full
feather. |
 |
| Buffs and Partridge |
| I
hatched out this cutie last year. I love the white showing through the
buff. Her face is naturally more buff but I have to keep her trimmed so
she can see. |
 |
| Now,
I just can't say enough good about this girl. I love the nice medium full
crest. And look at the beautiful buff color. No black or blue in this
girl. |
 |
| I
love this boy. He does have a little black in his tail and his waddles are
a bit long but he is still a beauty. |
 |
|
Grays Light and Dark
|
| This
boy is another one that I can't say enough about. I love the light gray/columbian
color, the way he stands, the beautiful crest, great toes, and foot
feathering. I think he is just perfect. |
 |
| This
is a gray hen. All my grays seem to be molting or broody so they don't
look their best right now. |
 |
| This
girls is a bit lighter than the rest of the grays and she is also smaller.
Poor girl does suffer a bit from a long beak and I have to keep it trimmed
for her. |
 |
| Here
is another hen that needs to grow a few more feathers in to look her best. |
 |
| Another
gray hen, I took her off of the nest to get the pic. Girls need to get out
and get more sun. |
 |
| This
boy is also molting. I have used him for breeding for 3 years and am
giving him a rest this year. He has produced some great gray babies. |

Roadrunner

Roadrunner is a buff hen, with good color but not so good quality. I have had
her for about 4-5 years. I picked her up at a flea market. She is a bit skittish
and not real friendly. Each year when I go through my birds for selling she
never ends up in the selling cages. I am not really sure why I have kept her all
of these years. I guess she is just a bit special to me in her own way. I have
never used her in the breeding pens, she is just special.
