Silkies Silkies were one of my first chicken breeds. They are also one of the breeds I have kept over all of the others. I got my first silkies in May of 2002. I have had black, blue, splash, gray, white, buff, partridge, and some odd colors. Right now I am only breeding blue/splash and gray. I may get a few other colors here and there, but do not breed them regularly. Silkies are a very sweet breed. There are several that I can go out and pick up with very little fuss. They seem to get along with other breeds without any problems. They have an unusual feather that in turn makes the silkies soft like a cat or rabbit. They actually look more like toys than chickens. I do not breed for show quality. All of my chickens are free range most of the year so I have to be sure they have a fair amount of vision. Many of the show quality silkies have limited to no vision. I do not want the chore of trimming monthly so I try to breed mine with a clear sight. After all, the standard does say medium size crest. Although that is not what is seen in the shows. Blues/Splashes As you can tell my splash/blues the crests are a bit large for me. But they can all see without being trimmed. Grays I didn't get very many gray pics because most of my girls are broody or molting. As you can tell from my hen above she is still molting, but didn't look too bad for pics. I will try to remember to add more pics later on. Roadrunner Roadrunner is a buff hen, with good color but not so good quality. I have had her for about 4-5 years. I picked her up at a flea market. She is a bit skittish and not real friendly. Each year when I go through my birds for selling she never ends up in the selling cages. I am not really sure why I have kept her all of these years. I guess she is just a bit special to me in her own way. She is my only buff. |
